For this project the original scope of work was to replace the bedding sand and surface stones of an existing patio, leaving the old foundation from the original patio intact. Unfortunately, the original foundation was really, really bad: it was mostly sand and black soil, which expands when water gets into it. If this patio was going to last, we needed to remove all the black soil and install a good foundation. I discussed the problem with the client and they decided that the extra cost for installing a good foundation was worth the investment. We removed all the black soil, digging greater than 7" in some areas, installed a minimum 4" aggregate base with non- expanding, well graded soil with reinforcement(geogrid) in the middle and geo-fabric on the subgrade for protection with lots of compaction. The stones used for the patio were Dimension 12 - 3 price modular in Sepia colour (Expocrete) in Pattern A with a Holland 4x8 (charcoal, Expocrete) soldier course.
